La leggenda del serpente piumato e dell’uomo bianco

Secondo una leggenda fu un uomo bianco, biondo e con gli occhi cerulei che portò la suprema conoscenza al popolo Maya. Ne fu Maestro insegnando i misteri dell’astronomia, le regole matematiche e le tecniche artigianali e soprattutto la saggezza.

Il viaggio di quest’uomo misterioso lo portò a soggiornare tra gli olmechi, i toltechi e gli aztechi.

Gli inca lo chiamavano Viracocha, gli Aymara Hyustus e ai polinesiani era noto come Kon – Tiki il dio Sole.

Per i Maya fu Quetzalcoatl, il Serpente Piumato.

Egli insegnò loro a costruire le piramidi e i palazzi di pietra. Disse che la purificazione non sarebbe più avvenuta attraverso sacrifici umani e che le anime dei puri avrebbero avuto in dono l’immortalità.

Quando Quetzalcoatl morì, salì in cielo diventando Venere, la “Stella del Mattino”. (Storicamente il nome attribuito al pianeta Venere come Stella del Mattino è Lucifero -dal latino portatore di luce- poiché anticipatore della luce solare).

Nel “Tempio delle Iscrizioni”, la tomba del re-sacerdote Pacal che regnò a Palenque, troviamo molte indicazioni sulla leggenda di Quetzalcoatl, L’uomo bianco insegnò ai Maya che il sole influiva sulla fertilità, fece conoscere loro la storia del mondo che era stato creato quattro volte e sempre era stato distrutto in modo catastrofico.

Si raccontava che fosse stato proprio Quetzalcoatl, recandosi a Mictlan (il mondo sotterraneo) a creare il quinto mondo. Per far ciò avrebbe usato il suo stesso sangue, con il quale infuse nuova vita alle ossa delle razze che lo avevano preceduto.

Il quinto mondo, secondo il calendario Maya, terminò il 21 dicembre del 2012.

Patrono di tutti i sacerdoti, simbolo della morte e della resurrezione, il Serpente Piumato, rappresentava per le culture del centro-america il principio cosmico del duale: la terra del serpente e il cielo dell’uccello, riuniti in un’unica simbologia.

Quetzalcoatl simboleggiava l’eroe civilizzatore primordiale e l’entità mitica fatto oggetto, nella Tenochtitlàn degli ultimi giorni, della più profonda venerazione. La sua origine è rintracciabile fra i Toltechi, ma egli entrò ben presto anche nel culto azteco, dove diventò il punto di riferimento dell’evoluzione morale e spirituale della religione.

A questo punto la domanda è d’obbligo. Chi si celava dietro questa figura mitologica?

Secondo alcuni studiosi potrebbe essere un personaggio storico, il re-sacerdote Topiltzin Ce Acatl, che si suppone sia vissuto a Tollan, dove governò tra il 977 e il 999.

Topiltzin Ce Acatl avrebbe istruito gli indigeni nell’uso dei metalli, nell’agricoltura e nell’arte delle istituzioni sociali. Fu conosciuto come inventore dei libri, del calendario e soprattutto come colui che donò il mais al genere umano. La sua fu l’età dell’oro del Messico: quindi, a questo punto, non ci sarebbe da meravigliarsi che Quetzalcoatl fosse poi ricordato nell’ambito del divino e che le leggende fiorissero velocemente.

Al mito, inoltre, si attribuiva anche una nascita mistica, quella di figlio del grande guerriero Mixcoatl e di una donna Colhuacana di nome Chimalman che l’avrebbe concepito pur restando vergine.

La riforma del culto religioso tradizionale intrapresa da Quetzalcoatl, compresa l’abolizione dei sacrifici umani, che andavano sostituiti con offerte di fiori, incenso e pane di mais, suscitò presto il rancore degli altri sacerdoti.

La vita mistica di sacerdote di Quetzalcoatl, basata sul digiuno e sull’astinenza finì quando un giorno fu spinto ad ubriacarsi dai servitori di Tezcatlipocal (dio del male e del cielo notturno, suo rivale e nemico nella creazione del mondo). In quell’occasione Quetzalcoatl diede selvaggio sfogo alla sua passione per la giovane Quetzalpétatl.

Reo di aver peccato, avrebbe abbandonato la città di Tollan, seguito fedelmente dalla sua gente.

Si fermò a Cholula dove gli fu eretto un tempio le cui grandiose rovine esistono tuttora. Giunto infine sul Golfo del Messico, Quetzalcoatl si congedò dal suo popolo, promettendo però che sia lui sia i suoi discendenti sarebbero un giorno tornati da Est, per mare, riconquistando il potere e portando una nuova età dell’oro.

La speranza in un ritorno dell’epoca d’oro restò viva fra il popolo e fu questa, tra le altre ancora, una delle circostanze che favorì Cortés nella sua conquista dell’antico Messico.

Si diceva, infatti, che Quetzalcoatl fosse molto alto di statura, di pelle chiara, con lunghi capelli neri (non più biondi) e una barba fluente. Queste caratteristiche, in gran parte, corrispondevano a quelle di Cortés e dei suoi conquistadores. Inoltre erano giunti tutti per mare, da Est.

Il re azteco Montezuma II, alla notizia dello sbarco degli Spagnoli nel 1519 fu effettivamente incerto se si trattasse oppure no del promesso ritorno del dio Quetzalcoatl. Anche per questo motivo fu portato a tentennare nell’opposizione al conquistatore Cortés, il quale fu anzi inizialmente accolto con grandi onori.

A complicare il tutto, c’erano poi altri elementi.

Il dio Kukulcan dei Maya, ad esempio, corrispondeva perfettamente a Quetzalcoatl anche nelle caratteristiche fisiche, ed anche presso gli indiani del Perù si favoleggiava di uomini bianchi che, dopo aver sparso i semi della civiltà, se ne sarebbero andati.

Nessuno finora ha mai spiegato la connessione tra il serpente piumato e l’uomo bianco barbuto o le analogie religiose tra varie culture e religioni.

L’unica certezza che abbiamo è che a causa di una leggenda la conquista del Messico era iniziata.
