“Era appena scesa la notte, quando mi sveglia di soprassalto, e vidi davanti a me il disco della luna piena uscito dalle onde, splendente di bianco,

Adorazione di Iside

I capelli, lunghi folti e appena ondulati, le scendevano in dolce disordine sul collo divino. In testa portava una corona di fiori diversi intrecciati, in mezzo alla quale, proprio sopra la fronte, brillava un disco piatto che diffondeva una candida luce: a destra e a sinistra era stretto da vipere col corpo proteso nell’attacco. In cima era ornato da spighe di grano.

La dea indossava una veste di lino sottile, dal colore cangiante, ora di un bianco abbagliante, ora giallo come croco, ora fiammante di rosso splendore.

Ma quello che più stupiva il mio sguardo era il manto nerissimo, splendente di cupi bagliori, che l’avvolgeva dal fianco destro fino alla spalla sinistra, come uno scudo, e poi ricadeva in infinite pieghe fino al bordo della veste, e fluttuava con le eleganti frange degli orli.

Sia nel tessuto sia in fondo alla frangia brillavano stelle disseminate qua e là, e proprio al centro la luna piena mandava bagliori di fiamma. E oltre a questo, lungo tutto il mantello, correva una fascia di fiori e frutti di ogni specie.

Nelle mani aveva oggetti diversi.

Nella destra un sonaglio di bronzo, formato da una lamina sottile piegata a forma di balteo, da cui pendevano asticciole che, mosse tre volte dal movimento del braccio, mandavano un suono squillante. Alla mano sinistra, invece, teneva appeso un vaso d’oro a forma di piccola nave, e in cima al manico un aspide alzava la testa sul collo largo e gonfio. E i suoi piedi d’ambrosia calzavano sandali di foglia di palma, simbolo della vittoria.

E in tutto il suo splendore, con un dolce profumo d’arabiche essenze, si degnò di rivolgermi queste parole:

Io, madre di tutte le cose,
signora di tutti gli elementi,
principio di tutte le generazioni nei secoli,
la più grande dei numi,
la regina dei Mani,
la prima dei celesti,

le salutari brezze del mare,
i lacrimati silenzi degli inferi.

Io,

E infine i popoli che il sole nascente rischiara con i suoi primi raggi, cioè gli etiopi e gli egizi, d’antica sapienza, solo questi mi onorano con le cerimonie che mi son proprie, e mi chiamano col mio vero nome di Iside regina.
