Gli egizi camminavano quasi sempre scalzi poichè consideravano le calzature un accessorio puramente ornamentale e non indispensabile.

Nonostante i sandali fossero già conosciuti nell’epoca predinastica, le donne non ne facevano uso, mentre gli uomini li indossavano soltanto, quando si recavano a far visita a qualcuno. In questo caso le persone di un certo rango si facevano accompagnare da un servo il cui compito era quello di portare le calzature che il padrone avrebbe indossato, ma soltanto nel momento in cui sarebbe giunto a destinazione.

Tra le alte funzioni di Corte si trova anche quella di “porta-sandali del re”.

Durante il medio regno, la calzatura diventò un simbolo di distinzione tra ricchi e poveri. Questi ultimi non ne possedevano, mentre le persone di rango elevato, anche se continuavano ad indossarle solo giunti a destinazione, portavano le calzature sempre con sé.

Nel Nuovo Regno l’uso dei sandali diventò generale. Solitamente erano fatti di una suola di scorza di palma o fibra di papiro, raramente di cuoio, con attaccati dei lacci fatti dello stesso materiale, quelli dei sovrani potevano terminare con la punta ricurva.

La buona educazione imponeva di non mostrarsi mai con i piedi calzati in presenza di persone di rango più elevato. L’essere ammessi al cospetto del Faraone indossando dei sandali era da considerarsi un grande onore.
