Carcassonne è la più grande città fortificata d’Europa. Capoluogo del dipartimento dell’Aude, nella regione dell’Occitania, fu dichiarata Patrimonio UNESCO nel 1997.
Le sue mura merlate e l’imponente castello sono un richiamo allettante non solo per gli amanti della storia e della cultura. Infatti, grazie al suo fascino medievale, il borgo francese fu scelto come set per il film Robin Hood – Il principe dei ladri con Kevin Costner e Morgan Freeman.
LE PRIME TRACCE DI CARCASSONNE RISALGONO AL 3500 A. C.
Diventò strategicamente importante quando, intorno al 100 a.C., i romani fortificarono la cima della collina e ne fecero il centro capitale della colonia di Julia Carcaso, in seguito Carcasum.
All’inizio del VII secolo, i Visigoti presero il controllo della zona e costruirono nuove fortificazioni, tuttora esistenti. Grazie a queste fortificazioni riuscirono a respingere gli attacchi dei Franchi. Fu poi la volta dei Saraceni che nel 725 conquistarono Carcassonne finché non furono cacciati nel 759 da Pipino il Breve.
Nel 1067 Carcassonne diventò proprietà di Raimond Roger Trencavel, Visconte di Albi e Nîmes. Nei secoli successivi la famiglia Trencavel si alleò alternativamente con Barcellona e Tolosa. I Trencavel fecero costruire il Castello Comitale (Chateau Comtal) e la Basilica di Saint-Nazaire.
Carcassonne diventò famosa per il suo ruolo nella Crociata albigese, quando la città era una roccaforte dei Catari francesi. Nell’agosto 1209, l’esercito crociato di Simone di Montfort costrinse i cittadini alla resa. Monfort fece uccidere Trencavel diventando il nuovo Visconte.
Grazie all’ampliamento delle fortificazioni fatte da Monfort, Carcassonne salì al rango di piccola città di frontiera tra Francia e Aragona.
Nel 1247 la cittadina si sottomise al potere del Re di Francia, Luigi IX, che fondò la parte nuova della città oltre il fiume. Il re e il suo successore Filippo III costruirono le mura più esterne. Nel 1355, durante la Guerra dei cent’anni, Edoardo il Principe Nero tentò di conquistare la città, non vi riuscì, ma le sue truppe distrussero la Città Bassa.
Nel 1659, la pace dei Pirenei trasferì la provincia di confine dalla regione di Rossiglione alla Francia, e l’importanza militare di Carcassonne diminuì. Le fortificazioni furono abbandonate e la città diventò principalmente un centro economico incentrato sull’industria tessile.
La cittadella fortificata cadde in rovina.
Il governo francese considerò seriamente la sua demolizione, emanando un decreto ufficiale nel 1849, che causò la ribellione dei cittadini. Lo storico Jean-Pierre Cros-Mayrevielle e lo scrittore Prosper Mérimée, guidarono una campagna per preservare la fortezza come monumento storico e nello stesso anno l’architetto Eugène Viollet-le-Duc fu incaricato del restauro del luogo.
Intrecciata alla storia di Carcassonne, vi è la leggenda di Dama Carcas, ricordata con un busto all’ingresso della Cité. Si trattava di una principessa saracena che, rimasta vedova, prese il controllo dell’esercito e con uno stratagemma, liberò la città dall’assedio di Carlo Magno.
Per dimostrare che le provviste erano ancora abbondanti, Dama Carcas nutrì un maiale con l’ultimo sacco di grano. Gettò quindi il povero animale dalla torre facendo credere ai soldati che il popolo avesse viveri a sufficienza.
Carlo Magno e i suoi uomini batterono in ritirata, la donna esultò in modo così rumoroso da far suonare tutte le trombe della città. La leggenda narra che i soldati di Carlo Magno, voltandosi, esclamassero “Carcas sonne”, da cui deriverebbe il nome della città, appunto Carcassonne.
Carcassonne si può visitare tranquillamente a piedi in un giorno per esplorare la Cité medievale, con le sue cinquantatre torri e i suoi tre km di cinta muraria.
Di sera si può passeggiare tra i vicoli tortuosi che conferiscono un’aria romantica al centro storico, colmo di bistrot, ristoranti e negozi dove fare shopping di prodotti dell’artigianato locale.
Che cosa vedere nel borgo antico di Carcassonne?
Ovviamente il Castello Comtal, la visita guidata permette di salire sulle mura e sulle torri. La Basilica di San Nazario (XI-XII secolo), una curiosa commistione di stile romanico e gotico con magnifiche vetrate e rosoni.
Sotto la cittadella si trova la Bastide St. Louis, la parte moderna con la cattedrale Saint-Michel e la chiesa Saint-Vincent; da quest’ultima, attraverso una salita composta da oltre 200 gradini, è possibile raggiungere la cima del campanile per ammirare un panorama mozzafiato. E infine il Ponte Vieux, o Ponte Vecchio, che collega la parte antica a quella moderna.
Carcassonne ha un ricco calendario di eventi.
La tradizionale festa del 14 luglio conosciuta per gli spettacolari fuochi d’artificio, mentre nei mesi estivi si tengono spettacoli equestri all’interno della cinta muraria.
Da non perdere il Festival di Carcassonne dedicato a spettacoli di opera, musica classica, teatro e la Feria di Carcassonne una kermesse dedicata alla musica e alla danza popolare.
Infine, nelle ultime tre settimane di dicembre si tiene La Magie de Noël, (la Magia di Natale) con festose illuminazioni e spettacoli per tutta la famiglia.
