Ibis

L’Ibis con il suo becco piegato a forma di falce, smuovendo il terreno dà l’impressione in un continuo cercare.

La curvatura del becco ricorda la falce della luna mentre la permanente vicinanza all’acqua indica una segnatura lunare.

Per gli antichi egizi aveva una grande valenza simbolica, tanto da essere consacrato a Thot, dio della saggezza, del quale era considerato la personificazione terrestre.

Per gli Ebrei invece, l’Ibis rappresentava un simbolo negativo probabilmente perché nel quinto libro di Mosè tutti gli uccelli con le gambe lunghe sono annoverati fra gli animali impuri.

Nel testo paleocristiano Fisiologo, e anche nel Bestiario medievale, si legge che l’Ibis non può nuotare e che per questo si nutre di pesci morti lungo le rive.

Esso procura il cibo per i suoi piccoli a base di pesci e serpenti:
“Sono pari all’Ibis gli uomini carnali, che si nutrono di opere morifere e le danno in pasto ai loro figli per condurli alla rovina”.

Secondo un’antica credenza popolare, basta gettare una piuma di Ibis su un serpente per immobilizzarlo mentre un solo uovo sarebbe in grado di scacciare tutti gli animali feroci.
