Nel Medioevo la figura del lebbroso riuniva più di un significato.

Nell’ immaginario collettivo il lebbroso rappresentava la tremenda e sconvolgente drammaticità della vita quotidiana e sociale. Quando, nell’XI secolo, la lebbra si diffuse in Europa occidentale con maggiore forza che in passato, non fu percepita solo come malattia, ma si trasformò in simbolo.

Il lebbroso rappresentava l’uomo deturpato in tutto il corpo dal peccato.

Nel XII secolo l’aumento demografico, i pellegrinaggi, le crociate e i numerosi viaggi d’affari avevano contagiato le terre dall’Occidente all’Oriente.

Il problema della lebbra e dei lebbrosi si presentò in modo catastrofico alla collettività. Si iniziarono allora le costruzioni dei lebbrosari, dove venivano ricoverati i malati che ricevevano le cure indispensabili per una sopravvivenza alle volte anche lunga. Le persone impegnate nelle numerose fondazioni furono spesso dei laici, ma anche i religiosi dettero il loro aiuto.
