Solitamente arrivando in un nuovo posto, si trova sempre qualcuno pronto a dare consigli, ad aiutare.

In Vietnam, no!

In Vietnam un soldato appena arrivato, un FNG (Fucking New Guys – Fottuti Nuovi Arrivati), era trattato dal suo plotone come una non-persona da evitare finché non diventava come gli altri.

Era un pericolo, parlava troppo forte, faceva troppo rumore quando, si muoveva, non sapeva quale equipaggiamento portarsi. Non conosceva i comandi basilari del combattimento, sprecava troppe munizioni e non resisteva ad una marcia di soli 10 km.

Era un essere inutile. Questo, era quello che i veterani pensavano dei nuovi arrivati.

Un veterano conosceva le proprie responsabilità e sapeva farsi capire. Un sopracciglio alzato o uno schiocco delle dita, serviva a comunicare informazioni sulle posizioni nemiche o sulle aree pericolose. Il plotone era più compatto di una famiglia, pronto a coalizzarsi, quando un compagno veniva minacciato.

Il nuovo arrivato, oltretutto, si portava dietro il ricordo di troppe cose alle quali le truppe combattenti preferivano non pensare. Aveva altre due colpe; sostituiva un compagno di solito “eccezionale” e ricordava a tutti il momento del loro arrivo.

Era la sindrome dell’ “Io ci sono passato, ora tocca a te”. Ogni soldato era stato, a sua volta, un FNG e ricordava bene come era stato trattato.

Era una regola in Vietnam, il nuovo arrivato doveva subire finché a sua volta non diventava anziano e poteva rivalersi sui nuovi arrivati. Se veniva ucciso nei primi giorni non interessava a nessuno, il suo nome non era conosciuto, era solo un FNG tra i tanti.

Era solo un ragazzo spaventato, perso in un paese strano durante un guerra strana. Era solo il ricordo che ogni anziano aveva di se stesso.

L’incidente del Golfo del Tonchino
Il 6 agosto 1964 il Congresso degli Stati Uniti approvò la “Risoluzione del Golfo del Tonchino”, con la quale si autorizzava il presidente Lyndon Johnson a prendere tutte le misure necessarie per respingere gli attacchi contro le forze americane.

Imboscata nel Triangolo di Ferro
Agosto 1965 Le Truppe USA intraprendono le operazioni nel famoso Triangolo di Ferro, uno dei principali santuari del fronte di liberazione.

Napalm e Agente Arancio
I primi voli avevano a bordo piloti sud vietnamiti, e i Ranch Hand era considerati semplici “consiglieri” del programma Farm Gate, ma il comando da parte vietnamita era solo sulla carta e presto furono messi da parte.

Fu un’impresa enorme, ma alla fine il Sentiero di Ho Chi Minh fu trasformato in una rete funzionale di collegamento tra Nord e Sud
