I Vani erano i pacifici i signori dei venti moderati e delle pioggerelline, tuttavia quando vennero a conoscenza del trattamento riservato a Gullveig, si infuriarono.

Quella strega veniva dal loro regno e quindi doveva essere vendicata!

Prese le armi iniziarono a marciare verso l’arcobaleno. G li Asi avvisati da Heimdall, corsero fuori dai loro palazzi per fermarli, ma i Vani aprendo un varco nella recinzione che proteggeva Asgard, si allinearono in assetto di guerra sul sacro campo di Ida.

Incominciò subito una violenta e paritaria battaglia e infine, quando Asi e Vani compresero che nessuno ne sarebbe uscito vittorioso, si accordarono per deporre le armi e trovare una soluzione pacifica.

Decisero così, per assicurarsi una pace duratura, di scambiarsi degli ostaggi.

Odino mandò suo fratello Hoenir nel mondo dei Vani. Era un dio di una grande bellezza, ma un po’ lento di pensiero ed espressione. Fu quindi necessario farlo accompagnare da Mimir, il saggio jotun, perché potesse fargli da consigliere. Hoenir fece un’ottima impressione, tanto che i Vani lo elessero immediatamente come loro capo.

Con il passar del tempo si accorsero però che egli non riusciva a prendere nessuna decisione senza prima rivolgersi a Mimir. A questo punto i Vani si convinsero di essere stati presi in giro da Odino. Non osavano far del male al fratello del possente dio ma nello stesso tempo volevano vendicarsi, così tagliarono la testa di Mimir e la rispedirono ad Asgard.

Odino molto addolorato mandò a dire ai Vani che aveva agito in buona fede, suo fratello era uno degli Asi più vecchi, e con Mimir il saggio rappresentavano il meglio che potesse concedere come ostaggi.

Quindi Odino usò i suoi poteri magici e soffiò nuovamente la vita dentro la testa di Mimir. Da allora nei momenti difficili il dio si recò dalla testa di Mimir a chiedere consiglio.

Hoenir rimase con i Vani e non ci furono più discussioni, d’altronde gli Asi erano ben felici degli ostaggi che erano giundi ad Asgard: il dio Njord e i suoi figli Frey e Freya.

Njord, nobile e maestoso, preparava venti miti utili per gonfiare le vele delle navi e spegneva gli incendi più forti.

Frey era il dio della fertilità, mandava sulla terra le piogge e la luce del sole. Possedeva usa spada lucente come il sole e un cavallo capace di attraversare le fiamme più alte. Gli Asi gli diedero una nave che poteva viaggiare per mare e per terra e il meraviglioso cinghiale d’oro creato dagli gnomi.

Quando Frey lo cavalcava attraverso il cielo estivo le setole d’oro del cinghiale, brillando come i raggi del sole, illuminavano le vallate più buie facendo crescere i raccogli migliori.

Freya, sorella di Frey, era la dea dell’amore.

Giunse ad Asgard su un carro trainato da gatti grigi portando con sé la figlioletta Noss, la bimbetta era talmente dolce che il suo nome fu poi usato per descrivere tutte le cose davvero deliziose.

Ma la più bella tra le dee era spesso triste, perché suo marito Od era scomparso. Di animo vagabondo e sognatore probabilmente si era perso in qualche mondo e Freya andava spesso a cercarlo.

Sovente volava sotto le sembianze di un uccello, perché possedeva una muta di ali di falcone che, una volta indossate, la conducevano veloce verso l’aria.

In quel tempo nulla esisteva, non il sole splendente, non la luna, le stelle e la terra sulla quale camminare.

Gli Asi erano molto compiaciuti del mondo che avevano creato, ma sentivano che ancora mancava qualcosa in questa meraviglia: l’uomo.

Asgard
Sorgeva in cima al ponte arcobaleno e splendeva più del sole, la recinzione che lo circondava era stata costruita con pali d’oro e doghe d’argento.

Yggdrasil
Al centro della terra vi era un’enorme frassino :Yggdrasil e sinché fosse rimasto in piedi il mondo degli Asi sarebbe esistito.

Thor
Figlio di Odino e di Jord o Jorth dea della terra, una jotun accettata tra gli Asi, era il più forte di tutti gli dei.

Heimdall
Heimdall, figlio di Odino e guardiano degli Asi, fu generato da nove sorelle jotun ed avendo tante madri non poteva che essere bellissimo

Loky
In gioventù, ancor prima di appendersi all’albero di Yggdrasil e bere alla Fonte della Saggezza, Odino conobbe uno jotun di nome Loki.

Sposa del dio della poesia Bragi, a Idunn è attribuito il possesso dei frutti miracolosi dei quali gli dei si nutrono per mantenersi immortali senza invecchiare.

Un saggio viandante, il volto nascosto da un cappello dalla larga tesa, un mantello blu intessuto di stelle a coprire il possente torace, andava in giro per la terra mettendo alla prova l’ospitalità della gente.

Le Valchirie avevano il compito di portare gli eroi morti combattendo nel Valhalla, uno dei palazzi di Asgard, residenza dei morti in battaglia.

Il lupo Fenrir era figlio di Loki (uno jotun fratello di sangue di Odino) e Angrbodhra (Presagio del Male) che avevano generato anche altri due figli Jormungandr (il serpente) e Hel (Colei che nasconde)
